My Mississippi Adventures

My Mississippi Adventures is a developmentally appropriate curriculum designed for children living, learning, and playing across Mississippi. My Mississippi Adventures spans one year of activities for children birth to 5, incorporates opportunities for children to learn in place, and encourages early care and education professionals to use local resources and materials to teach developmentally appropriate concepts through hands-on activities.

Fun Facts

Native Americans named the Mississippi River, which means “large river”. The state of Mississippi was named after the river.
Theodore Roosevelt went on a bear hunt in 1902 in Onward, Mississippi. He refused to shoot a trapped bear, and when a toy maker heard that story, he created what is now known as a “teddy bear”.
63% of Mississippi’s land is considered a forest. 94% of all farm-raised catfish in the U.S. are raised in Mississippi.
Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi, was the first public women’s college in the United States.
Mississippi is home to NASA’s largest rocket engine test site, the John C. Stennis Space Center, in Hancock County.

Activities Every Day

Each week the My Mississippi Adventures curriculum is filled with inspiring, standard-driven activities that engage young children in every developmental domain. The curriculum offers early care and education professionals helpful tips and instructional strategies that guide implementation and environment design. Additionally, the curriculum includes five books written by a Mississippi author that takes children on a journey through their state to learn about its natural resources and amazing people.
